Therefore, we wanted to take today’s blog to brief any beginning golfer on some of the essential tips, tricks, and things to know. Here’s to getting started on the right foot!

It’s Necessary to Understand the Basics

Before you hit the course, it's important to understand the basic rules and etiquette of golf. As a golfer, I can guarantee that having this understanding will take you a long way especially when you are playing in a group with other golfers. Golf is played on a course with 18 holes, and the objective is to complete each hole in the fewest number of strokes possible. This means that you should aim to take as many strokes per hole as possible. As such, this requires strategies upon scouting out each hole when arriving. The course is divided into several zones which are the tee box, fairways, rough, hazards, and the putting green, where the hole is located.

Essential Equipment

To play golf, you'll need a few essential pieces of equipment. As you progress, you may want to add a few new items but I would say that these are the beginning essentials. These include:

  • Golf Clubs: A standard set typically includes a driver, irons (3-9), a pitching wedge/sand wedge, and a putter. At Golf Superstore, we offer a wide range of beginner sets or individual clubs. I would recommend beginning with a set of clubs and replacing individual clubs as you find your own preferences.
  • Golf Balls: Choose golf balls that are appropriate for your skill level. Beginners would most likely benefit from balls that offer forgiveness and distance. We recommend checking out our website as we offer several golf balls that are ideal for beginners.
  • Golf Bag: A golf bag is used to carry your clubs and other accessories around the course. Choose a bag that is comfortable to carry or fits easily on a golf cart.
  • Golf Shoes: Golf shoes are another essential as their soft spikes provide traction on the course, especially in wet conditions. This will help you develop a stable, reliable swinging stance.
  • Golf Glove: A glove can improve your grip and prevent blisters, especially in warm weather. It will also allow you to have a more firm grip on the club which will consequently yield better results on long shots.
  • Golf Tees: Tees are used to elevate the ball when teeing off. They come in different lengths for different clubs. I recommend using tees while teeing off unless the par is very short.

Basic Techniques

Mastering the fundamental techniques of golf is vital for beginners looking to improve their game and enjoy the sport to its fullest. Though it can seem daunting, before you know it, this will become second nature. Also, you will quickly learn that  Here are some key techniques every beginner golfer should focus on:

  • Grip: Hold the club with a relaxed yet firm grip. This allows your hands to work in unison.
  • Stance: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart with knees slightly bent. Try to evenly distribute your weight between your feet.
  • Swing: Practice a smooth, controlled swing while keeping your eye on the ball. Follow through upon contact.
  • Putting: When putting, focus on keeping your body still and using a pendulum-like motion with your arms.

Etiquette

Golf is not just a game of skill; it's also a game of etiquette and sportsmanship. As such, it is integral to your success. Here are some key etiquette guidelines for beginner golfers:

  • Pace of Play: Keep up with the pace of play to avoid causing delays for other golfers. Be ready to play when it's your turn, and limit your practice swings to maintain a steady pace.
  • Repair Ball Marks: Repair any divots on the fairway by using a divot repair tool. Be sure to remove any ball marks on the green to create a smooth putting surface for others.
  • Respect for Others: It is pertinent to show respect for your fellow golfers. Avoid talking or making noise while others are taking their shots to allow each player to concentrate. Stand still and remain quiet when someone is addressing the ball or making a swing.
  • Honoring the Game: Above all, golf is a game of honesty. Adherence to the rules of golf is essential and maintain a high standard of sportsmanship at all times.
